Do Photographers give you all the photos ?

We often get asked this question and the short answer is no however, read on to find out why this is the case.

We often get asked this question and the short answer is no.

Generally as a process, our workflow is to take all of the photos taken from all cameras on the Wedding Day and transfer them to the computer for review and editing.

The initial work is then to cull all photos that are of no use, this may be that they're completely out of focus, or duplicates of photos that you actually want to keep. This process would normally take the initial photo load (which could be around 5,000 photos) right the way down to around 1,000.

From that set, we take the remaining photos into the editing software (we use Adobe Lightroom Classic for editing photos) and hawk through them, picking out the absolute best of the best and prepare them for editing. This can often happen in 2 or 3 complete passes to make sure we don't miss any shots that might actually be secret winners and also as a duo, we see things slightly differently (from an alternative perspective).

Once we have finished editing and re-touching, we will leave the select photos and have a final trim down and tweak before leaving them to settle - much like a freshly grilled fillet steak should rest for several minutes to regain it's form.

The end result, is a final list of epic photos that make up your Wedding Day Collection.

These photos are the ones that get sent to you to savour. However, we do generally keep some of the photos that don't quite make it for a short period of time, this is just in case you ask us if we did have a particular shot that didn't make the cut and sometimes we do and can add edit it and add it in. Mostly, this is just 1 or 2 photos and for a specific reason.

So, to conclude; Do Photographers give you all the photos ? Then the short answer is no but by design.

This ties in with another article about 'How Many Photos do you need for a Wedding?'

How many photos do you need for a wedding ?

To answer this question, we need to loop back to around 600 BCE and the time of Aesop and his famed fables. Read on to find out more

To answer this question, we need to loop back to around 600 BCE and the time of Aesop and his famed fables. One in particular answers this question perfectly:

The Vixen and the Lioness

"A Vixen who was taking her babies out for an airing one balmy morning, came across a Lioness, with her cub in arms. "Why such airs, haughty dame, over one solitary cub?" sneered the Vixen. "Look at my healthy and numerous litter here, and imagine, if you are able, how a proud mother should feel." The Lioness gave her a squelching look, and lifting up her nose, walked away, saying calmly, "Yes, just look at that beautiful collection. What are they? Foxes! I've only one, but remember, that one is a Lion."

The moral of the fable is that quality exceeds quantity.

This is also true of wedding photography.

Firstly we have to consider that not all weddings are the same and not all wedding photography jobs are the same either. Some people have a full day of photography, from the first knockings of the day and the preparation of the Bride and Groom right up to the partying after that first dance. Others, however, may only want photos for their ceremony and reception.

I’ve read many articles stating a photo rate per hour but this an inaccurate way to look at it, mainly because the ceremony (as an example) will contain far more photos for an hour than say the couple shots a couple of hours later.

I also see, quite regularly, that people see more photos as a better ‘job done’.

This is where the fable comes in to play. The real value in the photography is from creating a story (or even a movie) from each photo that is delivered, ensuring that each photo is adding a valid verse into the story of your Wedding.

That said, when the question is asked – How many photos do you need for a wedding ? Then I would say that somewhere between 300 and 500 photos would be the perfect balance between attention to detail and also quality.
